The CFA® designation is increasingly becoming a pre-requisite for getting – or keeping – a job.  Each year, more people are sitting for the exam, and the pass rates have been declining.  No question, the examiners are making the test tougher, because they want to maintain the value of the designation.  By purchasing this workbook, you’ve shown a desire to want to be in the minority that passes.

The CFA® exam is a pass/fail test.  We’ve taken a lot of pass/fail tests – two bar exams, the CFP® and the three levels of the CFA® -- and We realize that there is one underlying premise to success:

If you study, you pass. 

It’s that simple.  But “studying” doesn’t imply merely a cursory once-over reading.  It means a level of preparation as though you wanted to receive the highest grade in CFA® history, even though it doesn’t matter whether you pass by a lot or a little.

The CFA® exam covers a lot of material, as you’ve discovered.  With so much material, the instinct for many is to try to read it as carefully as possible on the first go-round, because the prospect of actually having to read it again is pretty daunting.  We wanted to offer a workbook of the materials that follows the Learning Outcome Statements, because those are what you’ll be responsible for knowing for the test.

When we first wrote an abbreviated version of this Question and Answer Workbook, the main reason was so that we wouldn’t constantly have to lug all the books back and forth.  We didn’t have to consult the texts for the topics with which we were comfortable, and for the topics that had us stumped, we were able to read the Q & A Explanations in conjunction with a more thorough review of the assigned readings. We marked the Q & As that required more study and went we were ready opended the CFA Institute manuals.

Here are two basic assumptions for best using our workbook:

First, there are no shortcuts to success.  The CFA® Institute does not want to devalue the Charter through inflation, so they will make the exam plenty tough.  It is imperative that you do the assigned readings and the assigned problems.

Second, if you read something in the workbook that you believe is not correct, do yourself a favor and check it against the assigned material.  And if it turns out that the text was right and the workbook was wrong, please do me a favor and let me know as well.

Most of the Q & A Workbook is in the same font as this introductory material.  When you see something that looks like this, it is our editorial license that (hopefully!) makes the material a little clearer or represents our view of what you might expect to see on the exam.
